Home Furnishings has been established as a small family soft furnishings business for nearly 40 years. We began as a shop in Bilston selling haberdashery and as time went by built a reputation for supplying and fitting made to measure curtains. Bill Ganner used to visit customers at their homes with fabric samples, measure and fit the curtains, while his wife Kath made the curtains.
Bill then took the decision to move the business to the dining room of the family home and this then became the workroom solely making curtains. One day Bill and his daughter Louise whilst fitting curtains at a customer's house were asked if they could recommend an upholsterer for re-covering her three-piece suite. Bill being the man that he was said "I can do that for you" even though he had never attempted upholstery before. Bill and Kath worked on this suite together until they were happy with it. They returned it to the customer who was delighted with the job, recommending their work to her friends hence the upholstery side of the business was born.
The business soon outgrew the 'dining room' resulting in a move to a workroom in Wolverhampton. It was whilst located here that Bill started to supply and fit carpets. With the ever increasing workload and growing reputation son Richard joined the business after leaving school. He gained a City and Guild in Furniture Craft at West Bromwich College before attending a year long course at the London College of Furniture.
In 1975 the decision was made to relocate the business, opening a shop and workroom in the Shropshire Village of Albrighton near Wolverhampton and Home Furnishings was born. At this time Louise left the business to start a family and eldest daughter Kathryn joined on the clerical side.
Over the next 30 years Home Furnishings built up a strong reputation for the high standard of workmanship and quality of service that it provided for its customers. During this time the workforce grew to cater for the ever increasing workload.
Sadly in 1997 Bill passed away leaving the business in the capable hands of Richard and Kathryn who have continued to build the reputation of the business. In March 2006 we expanded again moving premises in Albrighton allowing us to open our first showroom. The opening of the showroom was a joint venture with Excel Electrical Contractors Limited.
The expansion to our larger premises and the opening of the showroom has allowed us to expand our collections of pattern books and hanger samples for upholstery, curtains blinds and carpets as well as introducing a range of wood and laminate flooring and also a selection of wallpaper books.
The move also allowed us to take on more staff in the workroom including Richard's sons Chris and Matt and his wife Fiona joining the team to help Kathryn with the clerical side of the business.
