We are a small soft furnishings business that has been established for over 60 years. We began with a shop in Bilston selling haberdashery. As years passed by, we built a reputation for being a reliable company for supplying and fitting made to measure curtains. Our founder, Bill Ganner, used to visit customers' homes with fabric samples, or for measurements, and also to fit the
made by his wife, Kathleen. Bill decided to move the business from the small shop to the dining room of the family home, which later became the workroom of the company, solely for making curtains. On one occasion, Bill and his daughter Louise whilst fitting curtains at a customer's house were asked if they could recommend an upholsterer for re-covering a three-piece suite. Bill took up the upholstery work
even though he had never attempted upholstery before. Bill and Kathleen worked on this suite together until they were happy with it. They returned it to the customer who was delighted with the job and also recommended them to friends and family as upholsterers. Thus, the upholstery side of the business was born. The business soon gained momentum and resulted in a move to a larger workroom in Wolverhampton from the family dining room in Bilston. Bill soon started supplying and fitting carpets. With the increase in workload and growing reputation, his son Richard also joined the business after leaving school. He gained a City and Guilds qualification in Furniture Craft at West Bromwich College before attending a yearlong course at the London College of Furniture.
In 1975, the decision was made to relocate the business. With the opening of a shop and workroom in the Shropshire Village of Albrighton near Wolverhampton, Home Furnishings was born. At this stage, Louise left the business to start a family and eldest daughter Kathryn joined in to help with the clerical work.
Over the years, the company built up a strong reputation for high standards of workmanship and quality of service provided to the customers. The company expanded to make up for the increasing workload. In 1997, unfortunately Bill passed away leaving the business in the hands of Richard and Kathryn. The two of them continued to build the reputation of the company over the years with the same level of customer service.
The expansion of the business continued with a move to larger premises in Albrighton in March 2006. The company's first showroom opened in Albrighton, as a joint venture with Excel Electrical Contractors Limited. With this, there is an increase in the options we have on offer including pattern books, hanger samples in the showroom and also a selection of carpet samples, upholstery fabrics and wallpaper. With the opening of the showroom, new people joined the business including Richard's wife Fiona. Fiona helped Kathryn with the clerical side of the business, while others helped with the tasks in the workroom.
